All children enrolled at the North Shore Sharks get a Sharks Soccer shirt at the start of the season, a season medal at the end, and cake + ice cream + candy at the season end party. Our club policy is to focus on fun, exercise and soccer in that order, with the understanding that children that aren't having fun won't want to play. Each practice includes at least one soccer match, generally in a 50/50 split of the practice between drills and match.
Note: ages below are the age your child will turn this year. So a 7 year old turning 8 in September should register for U9 since they'll be 8 this year.
Group | Ages | Description |
---|---|---|
U3 | 3 | This is a basic movement and introductory program. We'll focus on movement and coordination, having fun with soccer-oriented play. |
U5 | 4 to 5 | This is our introductory program. We'll introduce them to soccer with a variety of games, most of which are chosen from Canada Soccer's recommended drills and games. Focus is on movement, coordination and ball handling. |
U7 | 6 or 7 | They'll learn the structures of a game, field layout, and work on skills. The U7 field is painted to match a standard pitch, scaled down for U7 players, so all drills and matches are run as "real" soccer. |
U9 | 8 or 9 | They'll learn more of the rules of the game, positions, and work on skill development. The U9 field is painted to match a standard pitch, scaled down for U9 players. |
U11 | 10 or 11 | Players aged 9 may play up in U11 if they wish. The focus is on playing as a team, strategies for various scenarios, and further skill development. In addition to practices, U11 teams play one league game a week, which includes a paid official (referee). In addition to their shirt, player registration includes a deposit for a jersey+shorts to be worn at games. |
U13 | 12 or 13 | Players aged 11 may play up in U13 if they wish. The focus is on playing as a team, strategic play, and further skill development. In addition to practices, U13 teams play one league game a week and playoffs at the end of the season. All league and playoff games two paid officials (referee and linesman). In addition to their shirt, player registration includes a deposit for a jersey+shorts to be worn at games. |
U15 | 14 or 15 | Players aged 13 may play up in U15 if they wish. The focus is on playing as a team, more competitive play, and further skill development. In addition to practices, U15 teams play one league game a week and playoffs at the end of the season. All league and playoff games two paid officials (referee and linesman). In addition to their shirt, player registration includes a deposit for a jersey+shorts to be worn at games. |
Senior | Adults interested in playing casual or league games. We may also organize "drop-in" games. |
The minis (U3-U9) season runs 10 weeks, from June 11th to August 15th. Note that if possible we'll add extra days on the end to make up for days that were missed due to weather cancellation.
The youth season runs from May to August, and possibly into September if the team is successful in the playoffs.
Children should come wearing their team shirt and comfortable clothing; generally this means shorts and their t-shirt. Dress them in layers if it's chilly so they can remove layers as they heat up running around. Cleats are optional for minis thought they do make running easier. Shin pads are optional but we do recommend them - they can usually be picked up cheap at Walmart and other stores. Bring a water bottle, you can fill it/refill it at the fountain by the bathrooms. Sunscreen as the summer sun starts to hit us, and bug spray if the bugs decide to come out.
The club policy for all age groups is to play regardless of weather, with three exceptions
We will do our best to send cancellations via email at least one hour before the scheduled start. We will also do our best to post cancellations on our Facebook page. As always, parents may choose to keep kids home for any reason, but we'll only add extra days at the end of the season for club-recognized cancellations. If playing in inclement weather please dress your children appropriately.
As always you're welcome to reach out via email. Our Facebook page is also a great place to get answers, as parents and other club staff can read and respond to questions there.
